Spoken WordThursday 9 July
In-school poetry and storytelling workshops with Joseph Roberts, encouraging creativity and culminating in students performing their own work live at a New Brighton venue..
Event
7.00pm to 9.00pm
New Brighton
Why people should come
This isn't a poetry reading. It's the moment young people stand up and say something — in their own words, for the very first time, in front of a real audience.
Poet and storyteller Joseph Roberts has spent weeks in local schools running workshops that help young people find their voice — through poetry, spoken word and storytelling. The live performance at District House is where all of that work comes together, as students step up and share their own original writing with an audience for the first time.
It's intimate, it's brave and it's often extraordinary. Spoken word performed by young people who've genuinely got something to say has a way of cutting through in a way that polished, professional performance rarely does. Come prepared to be moved, surprised and inspired.
- Students perform their own original poetry and spoken word live on stagec
- Led by acclaimed poet and storyteller Joseph Roberts
- Rooted in weeks of in-school workshops across New Brighton
- An intimate, powerful evening at District House
- The kind of first performance that performers — and audiences — never forget
What to expect
An evening that feels nothing like a school event — and everything like a proper night out for words.
Arrival
Doors open 30 minutes before the performance. District House has a welcoming, informal atmosphere — arrive early, settle in and enjoy the space before the words begin.
Joseph Roberts opens
Joseph sets the tone with his own work — warm, witty and deeply engaging. He'll bring the room together before handing the stage to the young performers he's been working with.
Student performances
One by one, students take the mic and perform their own original poetry and spoken word. Every piece is different — funny, tender, angry, joyful. All of it real.
After the show
Stay to talk to the performers and Joseph — this is a night that tends to spark conversations. The festival continues across New Brighton if you want to keep the evening going.
